Day Seven

My weight was up a pound again.  Like I want to put on a tee shirt for the gym, "Fluctuation happens."  I walked in the pool, but only for thirty-one minutes.  The cougher came in and started coughing before she even got into the pool.  Wednesday, I was determined to finish my full time, but, today, I was like, "Uh-uh, can't get sick."  So I got out and went home and did abs and dancing for a half hour again.

I brought leftover spaghetti carbonara I had made for lunch, but I had forgotten to bring eggs for breakfast.  My children all love to go crazy decorating eggs with their many artistic ideas (I would just hurriedly dye each of them a pale pastel color and call it good), so I had cooked about five dozen eggs.  It might be a while before they are all gone.

I heard that a coworker had brought food, so I went, like everyone else, to see what she had.  The brownies were out, and some chips, lunch meat, and cheese.  I took a piece of the meat and a piece of the cheese, and rolled them together and had it as a snack.  She later brought in a big Costco pizza.  I did have one slim piece.  I wanted to have another, but, honestly, one slice is enough, so I self-talked about not overeating and one slice being a whole serving.  Pizza is not the best thing to eat because of the white flour, but it does not have sugar in it, so I was still okay.

I had been well-fed, though, at work--more so than I had expected to be, so I skipped dinner.  My children left to go to their dad's for the weekend, anyway, and my husband left for his night job, so there was no one to cook for.  I set out some pieces of melon that had been in the fridge to have later.

I was also busy getting ready for my granddaughters' joint birthday party.  I knew avoiding cake and ice cream at that would be tricky.  A coworker suggested I pretend to eat and then spit it out into a napkin and throw it away, but I hoped to avoid such dramatics as all that.  Plus, I don't want sugar in my mouth.  I went and watched them open presents and play in the bounce house and on the trampoline.  When a very delicious-looking Costco chocolate cake and two big bowls of homemade ice cream were served, I went over to sit by my little granddaughter and watch her eat hers.  She was very concerned when she spilled a little bit onto the patio floor, so I went to get her a napkin.  She insisted on wiping it up all by herself.  She is sweet and fun to watch.  I was offered a piece of cake, of course, and I responded that I really can't have any right now, but thank you, it looks delicious.  I hope I didn't make it an awkward moment.  No one pressed me and made it awkward, either.  I would not hurt my granddaughters or my daughter-in-law or her family, for anything.  But they are supremely gracious people, and I think all is well.  The whole setting was extremely informal, with people milling around the back yard, so probably no one even noticed that I didn't have anything to eat.

Another obstacle averted.  This birthday party had also entered my mind quickly after deciding on no sugar.  That and Easter, and the cake at work, and my mother's birthday party coming up, and my son's next month, and so forth and so on.  If by some miracle I lose all the weight before a hundred days goes by, I think I will allow sugar just for these kinds of special occasions.  I'll try the "zero or one" again.  I do realize that it is not likely that I will lose the weight before the time goes by, but I am excited to see how far I can get.  Maybe you would like to stick with me and see how far I get, too.

After the party, I went home to my empty house, and I ate my few chunks of honeydew melon, made my cocoa, and went to bed.  In the morning, it will be a whole week since I started this.
